Welcome to Kolkata
Kolkata is the capital city of the tiny eastern state of West Bengal, the land of fish, football and adda. A city steeped in history, Kolkata owes its existence to the Englishman Job Charnock who, as a representative of the East India Company, founded this city on the banks of the river Hooghly, bringing together the three villages of Sutanuti, Gobindopur and Kolikata. Kolkata soon gained prominence and became the capital of British India in 1772. It remained thus till 1911, when the capital was shifted to its present location, Delhi. Read on for more…
