One among them is Unani medicine. This medical tradition originated in Greece, and was introduced in India by Arabs and Persians. Honey is the base of most Unani medicine, while herbs, minerals, pearls, certain metals, animal parts and other ingredients are used to produce curative potions. This system has different kinds of massages, and the use of leeches to suck out toxins has even been pioneered in some surgeries.
Today, there’s a large populace in our country seeking the wisdom of Unani doctors for all sorts of ailments. First-timers with ailments, who want to try this system, but are apprehensive about its merits and credibility, can check out the National Institute of Unani Medicine in the city. A blend of tradition and modernity, coupled with time-honoured Unani techniques and modern technology for one’s overall well-being.
NIUM was formed in 1984 as an autonomous organisation, and is registered under Ayush, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Karnataka Societies. In this sprawling campus extending over 55-acres, there is an administrative block, hospital, hostel and pharmacy.
This hospital has over 100-beds and medicines are dispensed absolutely free of cost. Some of the Unani medical services offered here are: regimental therapy, pharmacotherapy and dietetics for minor surgery, gynaecology, cardiac, respiratory, obesity, diabetes, psychiatry and urology amongst others.
Besides this, the college here offers a three-year post-graduate course in Unani medicine in four subjects: Moalejat, Ilmul Advia, Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib and Ilmul Qabalat wa Amraze Niswan.
The objectives of this institute are to promote Unani medicine, to be the top Institute in the world and to facilitate research and other activities, which would take this unique healing method to new frontiers.
