Sick and tired of the same clubbing activities and weekend binging, and looking for a change in lifestyle activities? How would you like to have an outing with some fun-filled healthy exercises and round it up with swigs of beer? Well, this is not an invitation to a wild college reunion or a pyjama party. In fact, this is serious business of jogging on a marked trail, and at end of the rainbow (finish line), all runners quench their thirst with swigs of chilled beer. Now, what’s not to love?
Welcome to the infamous “Hash Club” born in 1938, when a group of British officers based in Malaysia decided to run, to work out their weekend binge. And to reward themselves, at the end of the jogging session, they’d quench their thirst with chilled beer at a joint called Hash House!
Hash Club in Bangalore runs every alternative Sundays, and on an average about 100 Hashers turn up. The runs are inspired by “hares and hounds”-where the hares mark a trail and hounds try and reach the finish line in exchange for a mouth-watering cold sparkling beer! The members range from 3 years to 70 years. From amateurs to professionals to the elderly and young ‘uns, everyone takes part. Between leisurely walks and breaks between jogs, all finally reach the finish line.
Most runs are in pristine countryside’s, and the distance range from 6 - 15 Kms. These runs are followed with celebrations like sitting on ice, folks drinking mugs of beer for not finishing the race, and other hashers dowsing them with beer and songs. Teetotallers can have soft drinks, and still participate in this unusual and glee-filled activity. The primary goal is to have a few social beers and plenty of laughs. On occasions there are parties, with DJs manning the console, short-eats and the like. Most importantly, it’s a novel way of meeting new people and expanding your social circle.
