A career in medicine is always coveted by the great Indian middle class and medical colleges are seen as the ultimate destination for brilliant young minds. Bangalore boasts of quite a few good medical colleges with state-of-the-art infrastructure and brilliant faculty. Many students who have passed out from colleges like Bangalore Medical College , St Johns Medical College , MS Ramaiah Medical College and Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences have managed to leave a mark in the healthcare industry of the country as well as throughout the world.
Set up in 1955 by the Government of Karnataka, Bangalore Medical College is the only government-run medical institute in the city and ranks among the top ten medical colleges in India. The college admits students to its MBBS and MD programmes through state and national level examinations. The MBBS course is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences with a compulsory rotating internship in affiliated hospitals. At the MD level, students can specialise in a host of disciplines that include paediatrics, gynaecology, dermatology, ENT and surgery. There are also super speciality courses in urology, thoracic surgery and plastic surgery.
Situated on Sarjapur Road is St Johns Medical College , its 160-acre sprawling campus housing an eight hundred-bed teaching hospital, hostel and staff quarters. Established in 1963 and administered by Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, this college is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Karnataka and offers courses both at the MBBS and MD levels. The MBBS course has an internship programme at the end. The MD programme has courses in anatomy, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, radio-diagnosis, pathology, general medicine, surgery, community health and nursing.
Nestled among a sprawling campus of 65 acres and neighbouring the famous Indian Institute of Science is MS Ramaiah Medical College. The institute has a thousand-bed teaching hospital and offers a range of clinical and diagnostic facilities. The college offers MBBS and MD programmes in all major branches of medicine and is affiliated to Bangalore University and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
The Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) started its journey in 1980 and is managed by the Vokkalighara Sangha. Located at V.V. Puram, the college has its own teaching hospital called KIMS Hospital . Affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and recognised by the Medical Council of India, the institute offers courses at both MBBS and MD levels with a mandatory internship at the teaching hospital.
