Happy animals at home and protected ones in the wild bring great joy and happiness to animal lovers. But not all of us share the same spirit. Look around and one can see great injustices done to animals and birds in the city and wild. Little pups tied and left in the sun without water, wild birds in dingy cages devoid of light and air, bullocks mercilessly beaten as they struggle to pull heavy loads and kittens tied in gunny bags and thrown at garbage dumps. Thankfully there are a few agencies like Karuna Animal Welfare Association of Karnataka and CUPA in the city, working to help these battered souls.

Karuna Animal Welfare Association of Karnataka was formed in 1888, and was then known as Bangalore Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It offers many services like: hospital facilities, operation theatres, 24/7 ambulances, providing shelter to rescued animals, birds and reptiles. Retired police dogs are sent here, and there is a large aviary for birds. Injured wild animals are also rehabilitated by this association.

Karuna is one of the frontrunners in the city helping to curb dog population through birth control, and vaccinating these animals.

Besides this, animal health camps are conducted in rural villages all over Karnataka. To promote awareness and to instil concern, Karuna Animal Welfare Association of Karnataka sponsors school events like painting competitions, essay writing, elocution with animals and birds as themes. Children are motivated to open Karuna Clubs at schools and residential areas in a bid to prevent cruelty to animals.


They pioneered the campaign to ban bloody sports like bull fighting, cock fighting, dog fighting, ritual sacrifices and other such gory activities. If you are an animal lover, then do your bit by adopting an animal from here as a pet, or make worthy donations for a better life.
