When was the last time you remember having a leisurely and wholesome breakfast? During time-crunched mornings, between packing your lunch and getting ready for work, there is seldom an extra moment when you can gather around the table with friends or family for a cup of coffee and toast, if not for a wholesome fare. But if you do manage to take time out from your rush hour, here is a low-down of some of the restaurants in the city where you can enjoy a power-packed breakfast before you head for the boardroom.
Topping the list would definitely be the Malavalli Tiffin Rooms, aka MTR. This is one of the most-sought-after breakfast joints in the city, and such is its popularity, that you will find yourself queuing up for a meal ticket. Spare the trouble during weekdays, but a Saturday breakfast here can be truly rewarding. The food is typically South Indian vegetarian. Other such places with a strong traditional flavour are Vidyarthi Bhavan and Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan.
Following suit are the friendly neighbourhood Sukh Sagars, Shiv Sagars and Shanti Sagars. The fare again is by and large South Indian vegetarian. If you don’t mind hunching over circular tables, elbowing each other for a quick bite, you could hop into one of their outlets. But some eateries do have an air-conditioned section as well.
If standing and having your meal is something you don’t fancy, drive into Airlines Hotel, one of the few drive-in hotels in the city. Your breakfast is served at your doorstep, err … your car’s door, and in style! Waiters place a small makeshift steel table on the window slats of your car and rattle off the menu—the regular list of idli, dosa, vada and baath. You can also choose to try something different, perhaps a plate of chana bhatura, and wash it down with piping hot tea or coffee.
Tired of the South Indian staple of idli-vada-dosa and want to add a continental flavour to your morning meal? Opt for the good-old Koshy’s. Koshy’s is not just a restaurant dishing out delectable grub to generations of Bangaloreans, it’s more of an institution. Here you can have your eggs boiled, scrambled, sunny-side up, or as an omelette. Top that with your sides of baked beans and sausages. If eggs don’t cut it for you, try out the chicken liver on toast or a plate of sandwiches. And if you are a die-hard South Indian who needs to have the coconut touch to her meals, try out their famous appam and stew.
Unless you happen to be an alcoholic, going to pubs in the morning would sound rather absurd! You can now break the taboo for—surprise, surprise—some of the city’s pubs do offer breakfast as well. Check out Pecos, Stones and Mojos for a hearty morning fare and come back totally converted.
Bangalore Bistro, Café Mocha and 100 Feet Boutique Restaurant also serve breakfasts that are worth tucking in.
Last but not the least, if you happen to have deep pockets, you could treat yourself to a grand morning meal at one of the five-star hotels like The Taj, Oberoi, Windsor Manor, The Leela Palace or The Grand Ashok where you get a splendid selection of a-la-carte and buffet breakfast options, both continental as well as Indian.
