What is it about machines that makes men go weak in the knees? It’s a question that baffles almost all women, and in all likelihood will continue doing so. Most often than not, men and machines are considered synonymous. A sign of masculinity perhaps, and bikes , especially, give an image of all things machismo.
Historically speaking, the earliest known memories of motorcycle clubs date back to the post-World War II era, when pilots aiming for the same thrills they experienced during the war adopted this machine instead. Unfortunately, the term “motorcycle clubs” conjures up negative images of gangs and hoodlums, and this is often stereotyped in movies as well (Marlon Brando in "The Wild One", for example). However, in America, there is also something known as the “one percenter” in the motorcycling community. This “one percenter” refers to a way of living, a nomadic lifestyle on one’s own bike.
Coming to the Indian scenario, the exact origins of Indian motorcycle clubs are relatively unknown. Generally speaking, clubs like these are usually about hobby-based activities and are rarely made "official". Bike manufacturers recognise the known ones and keep in touch with the owners for feedback.
In India, there are several motorcycle clubs that include Indiethumpers, Pune; and Madbulls, Madras to name a few. In Bangalore, motorcycle clubs that hold fort are the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club (RTMC), Pulsar Biking Group, Yezdiz, Bike Nomads, and 60 KHP. As evident, each club is typically characterised by the kind of bikes it rides, Royal Enfields , Yesdiz and so on.
Now, what exactly are the activities of such clubs? Basically, there are two types of motorcycle clubs. One, where members get together and discuss bikes (typically all clubs do that) and the other where they travel long distances on their bikes, in a sense, almost like a travel biking club.
As Arun from RTMC says, “Ask any biker what he or she likes about biking, and they will all say it’s about making the journey and not reaching the destination. There is something about riding on a highway, feeling the wind on your face and seeing awe-struck passers-by first stare and then wave. It is something that cannot be explained; you've got to experience it to understand it. All clichés, but true.” He goes on to say, “Sometimes it is just not enough. I undertook the longest solo ride of my life in the last week of December last year. When I finished it, I was sure I wouldn’t ride anywhere for a month at least. Two weeks later, my friends in Madras were riding a longer route to Nagpur. I accompanied them for around 200 kms, and the riding bug returned. The following weekend, I was off to Goa nursing a cold!”
As is evident, bikers from all walks of life are united by one commonality: a fervent passion for their bikes.
As Steppenwolf sang this popular anthem:
“Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way.”
Aptly sums up the motorcycle clubs and their members, wouldn’t you say so?
