Despite Chennai being stereotypically categorised as the land of idli, vada and dosa, it is home to other cuisines as well. Asklaila gives you the low-down on some of the popular restaurants, and their famed Gujarati thalis.
One such place is Swati, a unit of the well-known Saravana Bhavan chain, located at Mylapore. Rows and rows of tables and chairs with no particular distinguishing feature mark the ambience. The thali comprises of soft, fluffy melt-in-the-mouth dhoklas, cutlet made of green peas along with a refreshing glass of pudina paani.
While you tuck in these wondrous appetisers, the main course arrives comprising light phulkas with a rich potato dish, kadhi, deep-fried thin slices of bittergourd tossed with dry fruits, dal, peas curry, khichdi, srikhand, jelabis and lassi.
Located in the busy bylane of T-Nagar is Mansuk’s Sweets and Snacks. Ambience-wise, Mansuk’s exudes an air of friendliness, with Gujarati artefacts dotting the walls. The fare is the same as that of Swati's, but is spicy. The portions here are unusually large, so ensure that you enter this place on an empty stomach. Rangoli, also located at T-Nagar, is a must-visit as well.
So, go on, tease your palate with some delicious Gujarati fare.
