It is your friend’s birthday and she always wanted a lampshade for her room. Why not gift the same and give her a lovely surprise? Wondering about how expensive it’s going to be? Won’t be too heavy on your wallet if you were to check out South Indian Producers Association or SIPA (Kodambakkam).
As you walk in, you will find plenty of colourful lights and lamp shades in hues of blue, yellow and red, capturing your eyes making you set one or two aside for your own self. Near the entrance, there are cane products, like baskets and bags that look chic and elegant.
On the other side of the wall, you will spot a few wrought-iron wall hangings, candle stands and even lamp shades that look trendy and smart. These will go with any kind of décor, so pick out one for your friend knowing she will fall in love with it at first glance. Get it wrapped in handmade paper.
Walking through the rooms you feel like a child let loose in a candy store. Tempting are wares of various kinds: handmade paper stationery, like diaries, bags, folders, dolls, and key chains made of wood. In a small glass case, there are glass animal figurines, and Lord Ganesha idols.
In a room at the back, you will find cushion covers, mobile pouches and even bed linen. They even have some exquisite Rosewood furniture, terracotta, and ceramic items on display.
All these are handmade by artisans and craftsman from across the country, so prices might seem a bit on the higher side. Every year, at least a couple of festivals are conducted by SIPA where nearly 2,000 artisans from across the State take part.
