Celebrate Maha Shivratri 2010
Maha Shivratri falls on the 13th night of Phalgun during Krishna Paksha. This year, Shivratri is on the 12th of February. On this auspicious day devotees bathe the Shiva Lingam with the panchagavya & offer bael leaves & cannabis as part of the ritual.
According to Hindu mythology, Shivaratri symbolises the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. But for many, Shivaratri is the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya - the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. According to yet another story, this day is believed to be Shiva's favourite day.
Every year, Shivaratri is celebrated with devotion and religious fervour. Devotees observe fast and participate in jaagran at various Shiv temples across the country. They believe that sincere observance of Shivaratri will absolve them of all their sins and liberate them from the cycle of birth and death.
Throughout the night, the Lingam is given the holy bath every three hours. An offering of seasonal fruits is also made to the deity.
People drink thandai, a drink made of bhang, almonds and milk as part of the celebration. The merrymaking reaches its peak when the devotees sing songs & bhajans and chant the “Om Namah Shivaya” mantra. There is a tradition of listening to the Puranas for the stories related to Shivaratri.
The celebrations of Maha Shivaratri culminate the next day, when the devotees break their fast by eating the prasad that was offered to the deity the previous night.
