To most of us bamboo is just another kind of wood that can be used to make furniture. However, don’t be surprised if we tell you that bamboo is known to have more than 1500 documented uses, besides furnishing, that ranges from building houses and bridges to fashioning musical instruments. It’s not for nothing that this versatile wood is called the “miracle grass”.
A joint initiative of National Mission on Bamboo Applications and Earth and Grass Workshop, The Bamboo Store (N-Block Market GK-I; Ph: 9810328934, 9818882553) is Delhi’s first bamboo store, whose simple purpose is to promote bamboo-based products as eco-friendly alternatives to those made with plastic. The shop is still in a very nascent stage but is surely dedicated to making people aware of the scores of usages of bamboo!
The shop offers a range of products—lamps (Rs 800 – 1200*), baskets (Rs 300 onwards), artefacts like photo frames, mobile covers, coasters, boxes, trays, table mats, hangars, pen stands and soap dish—in traditional and modern designs. They also have screens and blinds for windows (Rs 66 / sq ft onwards) as well as tiles for flooring that start at Rs 160 / sq ft.
One might get numerous bamboo products at other places as well but the beauty of a dedicated store is that everything is available under one roof. What’s more, a visit to The Bamboo Store can come as a real eye-opener. For instance, did you know that something like a bamboo charcoal is also available? The shop also stocks edible bamboo shoots, the mainstay of many Chinese dishes. Rich in nutritional value, neatly-packaged and available all year round, bamboo shoots are 90% water, high on fibre and low in fat.
Embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle with bamboo-based products. Here’s your chance to give something back to Mother Nature!
