Come festival time and unlimited shopping is what Delhi does. There are no budgets on celebration so get those shopping bags and go out for some great festival shopping.
Dry fruits
Not many festivals in sadi Dilli are complete without dry fruits. And the best destination for dry-fruit shopping has to be old Delhi’s Khari Baoli . Take a metro from Connaught Place to Chandni Chowk, and walk through the galis near Fatehpuri Masjid for the best kishmish, almonds, pistachios, walnuts and cashewnuts. You could also find dried apricots and chilgozas. Roopak Store in Karol Bagh and Bharat Dry Fruit Mart in Janpath are other good bets.
Mithai and homemade cake
Not that you need any excuse to eat mithai, but still the festival season sees some frenzied mithai shopping . You could also pass up traditional mithai for some custommade cake or cookies either from Delhi’s patisseries, Cookie Man or Cravings (Arshi Dhupia). Handmade chocolates can be bought from Delhi’s chocolate bars.
Clothes and accessories
Sari shopping takes on a new high during December to March. Apart from being the festival season, it is also when you get your discounts. Karol Bagh Sari House and Meena Bazaar are just two among scores of such shops in the city. Visit Sisley, Blues and Debenhams for more. Malls in the city too offer unlimited choice.
Gifts
Handmade crafts and arts from Dilli Haat make for great gifts. Khadi Gram Udyog ’s pure honey and Fab India’s organic honey, masalas and spreads will definitely appeal to the health conscious. Or else, you can also gift watches from Titan.
For the house
Festival is a great time to add a new touch at home. Good Earth and Lifestyle are popular choices for home accessories, such as, silverware and crockery. Look to Fab India’s furnishings for quality and class. Shyam Ahuja’s durries, Anokhi’s (Khan Market) Jaipuri quilts, electronics from E Zone and mirrors and tiles at Sadhaka are other choices.
Festival paraphernalia
Kites, flags , rakhis, firecrackers, rangoli, pichkaris and other festival paraphernalia are readily available at all local markets and kirana stores. However, some popular outlets include Ved Prakash Mittal in Sarojini Nagar (for crackers) Sarojini Nagar Market (for diyas during Diwali), Dilli Haat (non-toxic rangoli powders), and Archies Gallery or Lion Emblems at Khan Market (for Christmas paraphernalia).
