No we aren’t talking about a nice fist-sized lobster soaked in coconut gravy, deftly swishing its claw, the way Jackie Chan does in most of his flicks. The headers ‘martial arts in Goa’ means exactly what it’s supposed to. No pun intended here. Most towns in Goa have had training centres for most conventional martial arts like karate, judo, etc for several years now. But the increasing influx of foreigners, who in the more recent years, have preferred to settle down for longish spells along the coastline, have brought along with them a thirst for new age martial arts. A number of hotels, resorts have seen currency in hosting martial arts training classes in their premises as a premium incentive for their guests. These martial arts sessions are also open to non guests in most cases. Do not be sucked away into the warm, pleasant interiors of the Laguna Anjuna , one of the older, more renowned resorts in the coastal village of Anjuna. Behind the terracotta lined façade and the hard-pressed mud paths, the resort houses one of the best Tai Chi coaching classes in the state. Tai Chi also known as Tai Chi Chuam is an internal Chinese martial art, which practiced for health reasons. While the martial art has also been classified as a competitive sport in China, it is best known for increasing longevity and improving health. Laguna Anjuna also hosts Chi Gong or Qigong classes which is yet another Chinese martial art technique which focuses on optimizing health benefits by focusing on breathing techniques. The Arambol beach in the extreme northern corner of Goa is an exciting hub if it's martial arts you want to learn. Although there is no formal approach, a select band of foreigners have taken it upon themselves to teach the interested disciples a rare Brazilian martial art of Capoeira. It’s an Afro-Brazilian art form, which is an amalgam of smooth repeated transition from martial arts to dance and vice versa several times over. Marked by smooth acrobatics, sparring, head-butting, kicking and even singing, it makes a really exciting spectacle against the setting sun at the Arambol beach. The Korean martial art of Taekwon-do also has a quite a following in Goa. It is in fact one of the fastest spreading martial at in the country. The Goa Taekwon-do Federation holds classes throughout the year (barring the monsoons) at the Panaji gymkhana, located in the heart of the capital. Synonymous with the legendary Bruce Lee, and perhaps the most popularly known martial art in the world, Karate expectedly has a huge following in Goa.
