If you still think that a Goan normally wears Bermuda shorts to work, along with a sunset-orange cotton shirt with two coconuts palms dyed on to it… think again. Coastal Goa, and Panaji especially, has seen a sudden proliferation of branded stores along its streets like several other cosmopolitan areas of India.
Panaji alone accounts for more than 50% of the branded stores in the state, most of which are located on the MG Road and the 18th June Road, which run parallel to each other. It would be best if you browse through these stores in the evening, because Panaji is in a way a walker’s paradise, with its pleasant weather and flagstone paved, manicured streets.
Mahatma Gandhi Road is one of the most popular shopping avenues in the capital with several stores selling branded goods present here. There’s United Colours of Benetton (UCB), Wrangler, Woodlands , Levis Strauss , Wills Lifestyle store , Spykar, Allen Solly, etc to choose from. All these stores are incidentally packed within an area less than a 100 square metres. The 18th June Road runs parallel to MG road and also hosts some branded showrooms. Arrow has an exclusive store here, so does the world famous brand Lee. Navelkar Arcade located nearby has another popular brand T&A, which has a wide range of clothing for men and women. Popular apparel brand Weekender , also has an exclusive store near the Don Bosco School in Panaji.
If its shoes you are after in Panaji, there’s the rugged Woodlands, sophisticated Lee Cooper footwear, and an exclusive Puma store near the Old Secretariat, only a couple of minutes away. Further down MG Marg is Adidas and a couple of shops down the street, the unmistakable Nike .
Panaji, also has a few stores known for a wide range of branded clothes and accessories they store. The one edge these stores have over the exclusive retail outlets is that they gives the shopper a chance to look and choose from a wide range of brands, all of which are found under one roof, thus saving you the trouble of traipsing around town. There’s Bharne’s located behind the Old Customs House, Baron’s on the 18th June Road, Poshak a two-storey apparel showroom near the Panaji market that are all worth a dekko.
The popular stretch of road between Calangute to Candolim, which has more and more stores and restaurants mushrooming along it virtually every day, has also carved out its own share of the brand merchandise pie. Calangute has branded stores like Lacoste, Adidas, Woodlands, etc among many other outlets, most of which are located behind the traditional Calangute market.
For those people whose poison is a pair of shoes, you just should not leave Goa without visiting Janota, an exclusive hand-tooled shoe store, which is located near the farther end of Panaji-Mapusa highway.
While the above stated names like Lacoste, Nike, Lee account for popular brands, Goa does have a dearth of outlets, showcasing the more exclusive brands. But all’s not lost with several five star resorts in Goa hosting dos during the off season where exclusive and niche brands like Hugo Boss, Trussardi, Daks, Rado, Mont Blanc make an appearance.
