Sinfully sweet: Hyderabad’s sweet shops

Nursing your sweet tooth in Hyderabad is not much of a problem, as every other shop round the corner is likely to be a mithaiwala. The range of sweets is staggering—you’d get everything from Bengali rosogolla to Mumbai halwa. Here’s a low-down on some of the favourite sweetshops that the inveterate foodies of Hyderabad love to frequent.

Almond House (Himayatnagar, Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills) is where most sweet lovers in the city make a beeline to. Gun for their ghee-laden Mysore pakam. The milk-based sweets might seem a tad pricey, but one bite into it and you know their real worth! The Almond House branch at Banjara Hills is the “eggless” division, in case you didn’t know.

The well-known Sri Krishna Sweets has an outlet at Ameerpet, Dilsukhnagar and RP Road. Must tries include Mysore pakam and halwa. If you need a Mumbaiya touch to your halwa, Bombay Halwa at Begumpet and Secunderabad can be just your ticket.

Leave your calorie-watching self behind as you enter G Pulla Reddy Sweets , aka GPR Sweets, at Begumpet and Karkhana, as desi ghee savouries are what it specialises in. Go there for kaju pakodas, khoya puri and Ajmer kalakand, besides the regular indulgences. Tewari Bros Mithaiwala at Khairatabad is also famous for desi ghee ki mithai. Their kachoris and samosas are minus onion and garlic and hence, a Jain favourite!

Those who haven’t tasted the kaju burfis at Dadu’s Mithai (Himayatnagar) still have a long way to go, gastronomically we mean. And if innovation is what you are seeking, Dadu’s lychee gulab jamun fills that void, delectably.

Have you given a thought to your evening snack yet? How about some jalebis, samosas or a plate of kachori? Delhi Mithaiwala at Ameerpet is there to answer your tummy call. And if you happen to be at Chikkadpally, don’t forget to hop in to Sri Balaji’s. Balaji’s Bengali sweets are delicious.

We haven’t lost you yet … have we?
