With two renowned universities, University of Kolkata and Jadavpur University, playing anchor for the academicians and scholars in the city, there is sufficient choice for good education in Kolkata. Here is a low-down on some of the well-known colleges of Kolkata.

Jadavpur University is a one-campus show. No other colleges are affiliated to it. The classes are held at the Jadavpur University campus in Jadavpur. The university is very popular for its Department of English, Economics and Engineering. You can register in an undergraduate course in any of the disciplines here and work your way to obtaining a PhD if you are so inclined.

The oldest college in the city, Presidency College, is also the most revered. Most famous authors and artists who visit Kolkata drop in here after a ritualistic trip to the Coffee House. Humanities and Economics are the college’s best-known departments, with science and commerce in tow. Presidency College vies with Jadavpur for the top slot in the list of best colleges in Kolkata.

Trailing at a close third is St Xavier’s College, affiliated to Calcutta University. It has already initiated the process to gain autonomy. St Xaviers boasts of a stellar alumni including stalwarts, such as, Sourav Ganguly, Vijay Mallya and Lakshmi Mittal. The college is sought after for its graduate programmes in Commerce, English and Economics. It shares the campus with St Xavier’s School and has a big playfield that doubles up as a concert ground as well.

Bhowanipore Gujarati Education Society College is the most happening in town. Bipasha Basu, it is rumoured, is among its alumni. Need we elaborate? It is very popular among the youth who love hanging out. As it is run by the Gujaratis, students from the community do get some concession during admission.

The graduate programme in Commerce is the biggest draw. However, science and humanities departments have also been around for a long time. The college also offers many vocational courses like fashion and textile designing and a course on DJ-ing.

Girls who wish to study in the company of women only, could pick from JD Birla College for Women, Loreto College and Shri Shikshayatan College. JD Birla College has a modern campus and is a big hit with women interested in Home Science. Loreto College is quite popular among girls opting to study English Literature. It runs vocational training programmes as well.

Besides these top colleges, the city boasts of numerous other relatively smaller ones that also have decent educational standards. Almost all the city colleges are affiliated to Calcutta University.
