Someplace Else, the only pub in the true sense of the word, in Kolkata is a fountain for the city’s pubbing brigade. The oldest watering hole among three others at the happening Park Hotel on Park Street, Someplace Else still remains the most popular and is patronised by those, who can sniff out the real from the reality.
Designed to look like an old English pub, everything, including the wall panels, is made of dark polished wood. The bar, running from end to end, has ample high chairs to seat a cricket team. Six to seven tables are also squeezed in, in this rather small (around 1,500 sq ft) place. All the tables are pressed against the wall and space has been cleared in the middle for those who like to shake their booty to the beats burnt by the in-house DJ.
Someplace Else has one band lined up for every evening from Sunday to Friday, while on Saturdays it is a double treat: two bands playing back to back till wee hours of Sunday. And yes! The bar keeps running as long as the band keeps going.
Usually the band starts around 9.30 pm and plays on till midnight on weekdays and Sundays. On Saturdays, the live act starts a tad late around 10.30 pm. The pub also arranges special performances occasionally. Saif Ali Khan, Gary Lawyer and the Amit Heri group have been roped in at various points in time.
Since it is in a five-star hotel, expecting rock-bottom rates is going a bit too far. But take it from us, it certainly is the most affordable of all the lounges and bars located in other five-star hotels in Kolkata. The food menu restricts itself to starters and snacks, not the best way to promote the palate-teasing fare at The Park’s restaurants.
There isn’t any hard-and-fast dress code for Someplace Else, but a smart get-up always helps. This place doesn’t have a reputation of showing people the door, but unruly and loud boys and men are not tolerated. That’s why girls/women love banging their heads here.
The bar serves everything, including expensive and exotic liquor and draught beer, still a luxury in Kolkata.
So cheers to Someplace Else for a night of unalloyed fun.
