Ever wanted to fly a plane all by yourself? You’ve just come to the right place. India Hobby Centre at Russel Street has been, for many years, helping people give wings to their flights of fancy with world-class aero-modeling kits, gliders and para-gliders.
India Hobby Centre is the Mecca for the aero-modeling and gliding enthusiasts in Kolkata. Located close to the open grounds of Maidan and Victoria Memorial, this place offers you a simple rubberband-operated glider or a model plane for as little as Rs 50. You also have the option of spending big bucks—a lakh to a couple of lakhs of rupees—in a more realistic model with a mini engine, walk across to the Maidan and try these out immediately.
If India Hobby Centre doesn’t happen to have the particular model you want, it’ll be more than glad to source it for you. The hobby centre also stocks various parts and repair kits for these flying toys and the store owner Rishi Kumar is ever-ready to help. Rishi is usually present at most of the flying events in the city, extending a helping hand and valuable tips to the beginners.
It’s not just plane enthusiasts that the centre caters to. The original Taboo and Jenga and a host of other party games are also up for grabs here. The shelves are lined with fancy remote-controlled car and bike models as well, of which the two-feet long Harley Davidson is a showstopper.
Hard-to-get board games and table games like Foosball can also be found here. Basically, anything you may want for your leisure within reasonable limits, you are likely to find here. Just make sure you get there between 11.30 am and 7.30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. On Monday they are open just half a day, from 2.30 pm to 7.30 pm.
There’s an ice-cream parlour, Sub-Zero, and a fast food restaurant, Big Max, on the same premises.
Stop by India Hobby Centre as part of your Sunday outing. You’ll go back richly rewarded.
