Bengalis simply love desserts! The uncrowned king of all sugary is the undisputed rosogullas, and then there are simple sandesh, to delightful mishti doi and sizzling jelabis dished out at Gujurati and Marwari tuck shops. And besides mouth-watering Bengali sweets, Kolkata has loads of other bonbon joints. So whoop it up at the sweeter side of the city, for an absolute treat!
For cookies, cakes and scrumptious munchies, there are many bakeries dotting the city, waiting to be discovered.
Let’s start with Nahoum Bakery located at New Market. This is one of the oldest in the city, and was started by a Jewish family in 1902. It is now managed by the new generation, and the muffins, cream rolls, pastries, brownies, rum balls and fruit cakes are legendary. There is an eclectic collection of wedding and birthday cakes, but during Christmas, they make the yummiest plum cakes.
Kathleen is a chain, and has many shops dotted all over the city. The chocolate pyramids, and choco Swiss rolls served here are eternal delights. Hordes of customers throng here for pastries, cakes, snacks, patties, sandwiches, puffs and quiches.
Even Haldiram, the sweetmeat giant, has jumped onto the bakery bandwagon, and have exclusive pastry and cake sections at some of their shops. All the pastries, cakes, puddings and mousses sold here are egg-less, and are favourite haunts for Gujarati and Marwari folks. They also have catering services for birthday parties, and other functions.
There are many smaller bakeries all over the city, and many are open till 11 pm. Many of them have much-loved snacks and goodies, tantalizing people with these scrumptious bites.
