No movie buff ever goes on to buy a DVD or a VCD of every movie she loves. Discretion always steps in, and that’s when she looks for a video library that can satisfy her requirements. Raja Electronics at AJC Bose Road has been around as far as any middle-aged Kolkatan can remember. One of the biggest and best-stocked video libraries in Kolkata, it started out way back in the days of the VCR and VCP and still has old video tapes tucked away in some backroom corner.

Raja Electronics boasts of one of the finest collections of DVDs and VCDs in the city. With the changing times this quaint store too has become “hi-tech”. Gone are the days when all titles were arranged haphazardly under the broad categories of Hindi, English and Bengali films. Rather they now come under section heads like World Cinema, English Action, Comedy, Romance and Horror. Also, making entries on a membership card is passé. Everything is computerised, right from catalogues to lending and borrowing records.

The world section at Raja Electronics is excellent and stands tall in comparison to any other video library in the whole of eastern India. From Tornatore to Fellini and Godard to Cuaron and Kurosawa, they have it all. Even the critically-acclaimed Israeli and Iranian movies have been brought in. The fact that all these DVDs are originals is worth the slightly high lending and membership fee you are required to dole out to the library.

The library is open from 10.30 am to 10 pm Monday to Saturday and from 4 pm to 8 pm on Sundays.
