There are times when you want nothing more than to zip off with your date to a restaurant that dishes out seafood delicacies at non-five star prices. Here are restaurants where you get finger-licking seafood at an incredible price of Rs 250* (for two).
Your first port of call can be Sadichcha (Bandra East), a quiet, relatively unknown but fabulous Malwani seafood eatery. You are likely to miss it unless you keep an eye out for it. Look for a non-descript entrance (sometimes dotted with a glowing kandeel) opposite the MIG Club in Bandra East. With basic décor (modest walls and yellow lights) and food served up in steel thalis, Sadichha does brisk business. Land up at 10 pm and discover they are all sold out. So come in early.
The chicken masala with wade and mutton masala with bhakri give you a lip-smacking taste of perfect Malwani spice. Go dry with prawns sukhe and surmai fry. The fried stuffed pomfret (crunchy exterior and soft, fleshy insides), fried bombil, prawns, bangda and gaboli will make you kiss that diet good bye. Tank up on the best sol kadi and mori masala (baby shark), available this side of the town. Marked by great service, the place however lacks air-conditioning and hence can make you sweat the spice.
In Dadar near Plaza Cinema stands Gomantak Boarding House that serves up some mean Goan coastal cuisine. No, it isn't a boarding house as the name suggests. On certain days of the week, you will find people queuing up for hours to sample the delectable food here. Move into the 25-seater air-conditioned section to make the most of the yummy surmai halwa, bangda curry, mussel fry, deep-fried pomfret, crab masala and shark masala.
The sol kadi has the perfect infusion of garlic, and the stuffed bombil is simply a culinary feat, deep fried and almost bursting with small prawns. Or else, you can order a fish platter that would be sufficient for the two of you. Shell fish masala tastes superb with neer dosas. No alcohol, no smoking, no reservations at Gomantak. The restaurant is closed on Mondays.
Singh's Dhaba lines the Western Express Highway in Andheri bang opposite Cine Magic, and under the (in)famous Jog flyover. This is strictly a no-frills-and-fancy restaurant. They virtually wash the utensils on the Highway. But come here till 2.30 am and you can get superb fried prawns by the kilo, masala gizzard, and hot fried fish.
Bluntly put, the grub here tastes yummy, is high on oil and is available till the wee hours. Of course, you need to weave in through the crowd and stand at the spot to get your packed goods. Home delivery? Forget it. They don't even deliver to your vehicle. Open from 1 pm till late.
That's what's great about Mumbai. You get food for every budget.
