It's the season of excess. So if you are raring to have a go at more than just rum tarts, tuck in that delectable sushi platter at these haunts.
Wasabi by Morimoto serves up international sushi on home ground. Wasabi isn't dubbed as Mumbai's haute sushi bar for nothing. Its spectacular spread will have sushi purists revelling in fillings like sauted sashimi, teppanyaki eringi (Japanese mushroom cooked in parsley butter), rock shrimp tempura, steamed scallops, tofu croquette and Japanese vegetables in teriyaki sauce. Don't forget to leave without devouring the Wasabi brulee here.
A hop away from Wasabi, next to Radio Club , nestles Tetsuma. Curl your lips around the pink caviar sushi and let it serenade your senses. Fresh avocado sushi, salmon sushi and ebi (if you relish prawns), pan fried lobster shavings in lemon garlic sauce or sea bass steeped in rice wine—you are spoilt for choice. Pair your platter with the best in sake and wines.
If believable prices are what you are looking for, move to Joss, in the heart of the SoBo's art district, Kalaghoda. Make way for succulent somethings, in fillings like pickled radish, vinegar cucumber, sake-soaked tofu and treasured flecks of salmon roe. Remember to try the grilled silken-tofu meshed with crunchy asparagus heads and devilled diamond squids. What makes your heart simply sing is the chocolate maki roll with strawberry and kiwi Wasabi (it is served with blueberry shoyu dipping sauce).
Origami fills the space for a mid-town culinary detour. The eatery stands on the fourth floor of the hip Atria Mall in Worli. In nigiri sushi, try ebi (Indian prawns) and hotate (Japanese scallops). Shiitake (mushroom), kappa (fresh cucumber) and aspara (asparagus) in veg maki sushi taste great. Non-meat eaters can revel in the taste of deep-fried, crunchy vegetables in an assorted vegetable tempura. And yes, you can buy the sushi rice and bento boxes to take home a slice of Japan.
Distant burbie? Take heart. You can wield gleaming sushi knives at Pan Asian at the ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton & Towers near the international airport in Andheri. Here a melee of options, for both fish eaters and vegetarians, are up for grabs. Belly up to sushi of your choice with snapper, tuna, eel, flower prawns, cuttle fish and even octopus. Glazed pineapple, poached pears in honey and fine fig fillings find favour with the fruity palate. Dig into the sweet green kiyoto before your leave.
Whoever said sushi spelt only raw fish? Savour the specials and let the sake flow.
