Valentine's Day 2010: The mush-factor in Mumbai

Probably the only other Western festival that is celebrated with as much enthusiasm as Christmas, Valentine's Day has grown to become young India's favourite festival. Though the thought of the festival being a western import causes a bit of hesitation amongst people, youngsters just can't get enough of it. Barring the noise created by fundamentalist groups, Valentine's Day is all about expressing love for one's beloved and exchanging tokens of love.

The history of Valentine's Day takes us right back to 269 AD when a Roman priest named St.Valentine was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 AD. Legend says that before St.Valentine died, he left a note for the jailer's daughter who had become his friend and signed it “From Your Valentine”. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as Valentine's Day to honour St.Valentine. Though there are varying opinions regarding the origin of V-Day, St.Valentine's legend has been widely accepted.

Indians celebrate the day just like many other countries exchanging loads of gifts and cards. Roses, cupids and heart-shaped balloons are seen everywhere as cities colour themselves in hues of red and pink. The media, card and gift companies and even road-side vendors cash in on the festival with rigorous campaigning. Shopping malls are adorned by various offers and discounts to lure the young lot. Apart from movies and multiplexes, couples who love their food also plan for romantic dinners in some of the city's finest restaurants.

Apart from being on of the country's favourite western festival, Valentine's Day could also be called India's most misconceived festival. Going by the general impression, V-Day is more about young couples getting together and getting all mushy but there's much more to the festival. The festival is the best time to express your love, not just to your partner but also your friends, family or anyone who is really important to you. The one favour we can do ourselves this Valentine's Day is to dispel this misconception. Take your mom out for a nice dinner, treat your dog to some special treats, get your friend a card; do whatever it takes to make not just your partner but everyone who matters to you feel real special.

There is a whole bunch of things you can do on Valentine's Day to make your loved one feel special. People usually get cards and gifts for their partners so you could check out some of these gift stores to take your pick. If your special one is into movies, you can also take your companion to a great movie at one of these multiplexes. Valentine's Day also happens to be a great time to shop with loads of offers and discounts jumping up from virtually every store. Visit one of these malls to see what we are talking about. The perfect Valentine's Day is incomplete without a good, heart-filling meal. You can have a great meal at one of these restaurants and also end the day on a high note in one of these pubs or lounge bars. You can also check out this V-Day special event in your city.

Whether it's your girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, father, brother, sister or any other loved one, Valentine's Day is all about expressing your love so make sure you do it right.
