Like all good things, we have managed to adopt Chinese cuisine and give it a distinct Indian twist. But there are some restaurants that give us idea of the authentic taste. Let's take a look at some of these.
Mainland China on Dhole Patil Road definitely serves authentic Chinese so to those accustomed to spicy Indian Chinese this may not make the cut. A talk with the steward will reveal their philosophy or 'harmony in food.' They throw in contrasts like mixing sweet with spicy while maintaining harmony. Among soups, the lemon coriander is much touted. Other popular dishes are the Bean Curd Delight (a dim sum) and the Konjy Crispy Lamb (Stir Fry). The Sunday buffet with beer is worth checking out.
For a truly oriental ambience, walk into Silk Route in Koregaon Park where you'll see a golden lion and be greeted by waitresses in traditional Thai costumes. This restaurant again serves you the authentic fare undiluted by Indian style and covers Chinese Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese food. Silk Route serves good sushi made fresh in front of your eyes. Have the Hosomakhi California roll sushi and “perfect tasting” soya sauce with the pickled ginger. You can even try the Korean crab. For the main course, try the Hibachi (Japanese style Teppenyaki with chicken with a side helping of either shrimps or lamb). Teppenyaki comes with miso soup as well as rice or noodles. The noodles might be a little dry for some of you. The chicken portions are plenty, with four to five shrimps. T dessert selection includes fried ice cream, fried bananas, shaved ice or the syrup Indonesian dessert. A recommended item in food is the ginger capsicum rice and for dessert, the apple banana toffee or honey noodles in sesame. Expensive, but worth it.
For a posh setting and good food, visit Spice Island in the Le Meridian. To the accompaniment of a live band, you can tuck into the Peking duck and kung yang nang jim. The latter consists of grilled prawns in shells filled with lemony sauce. An appetiser recommendation is chicken satays whereas for dinner, try green curry vegetables and kung pao Chicken. Dim lighting and candles add to the ambience. It's a pricey affair, however this restaurant offers the half order options. Drop in for a special evening.
Now for some Chinese restaurants that are easier on the pocket. Yo China in Kalyani Nagar serves tasty stuff. Dim sums, chicken lollipops, garlic noodle, steamed rice, chicken hot garlic and red curry chicken are some of the tasty items on offer. You may find a sparse crowd in there so make yourself comfortable. The greatest advantage is the affordability. Now, you've got to like garlic, which these guys are liberal with.
If you just feel like a value for money Chinese evening, probably after a cocktail night, then Chung Fa on East Street might be just the option for you. Their portions are big and menus extensive. Among the new additions are Chinese sizzlers - the spicy prawn sizzler and black pepper chicken sizzler.
Another value for money place on East Street is Chinese Room, which is well known for its Chinese cuisine of lobsters and crabs. Among its popular items are sharklin and chimney soup, taipan cral, hobsters fish, prawn in different varieties of sauces like Hunan, Peking, Schzewan and Cantonese. The barbeque chicken, which is much talked abut, comes with non-standard garnishing. Among its top desserts is the sizzling brownie with vanilla hot chocolate sauce.
