Shopping
Pune is a city bustling with shopping brouhaha, no matter which day or time of the day the shopping bug bites. The mall culture has caught up and taken over Pune like most other urban areas of the country. But what makes for a fantastic shopping experience are the bazaars Pune boasts of. These bazaars have the ring of local culture, and have authentic products from across Maharashtra.
Head to Pune's very own Lakshmi Road - famous and over crowded – you can get almost anythig you desire here. Men's wear, saree shops, jewellery showrooms, chaat stalls, home decor stores, knick-knack shops and lots more is what is on offer here. Any visit to Lakhsmi Road is incomplete without a visit to Choodi gulli (bangle lane), where any woman can loose herself in the colourful bangles.
While on Laxmi Road, don't miss a visit to the Dagdusheth Halwaai Ganpathi temple. The richest Ganpati idol of the world and with millions of devotees, his blessings are believed to have the power to truly revive.
One of the very well-known bylanes of Lakshmi Road is Tulsi Baug. A far cry from the expensive shopping malls for the rich, this tiny lane will shock you with its fantastic collection of home necessities. Bed spreads, utensils, and anything you may need to furnish and decorate and make your house a home, you'll find it here, and at quarter the cost of the malls.
For the more adventurous who don't care to do all their shopping under one roof, the city’s oldest shopping bazaar calls out. M.G. Road is the most well-known locality of Pune. Divided into three streets – Moledina Road, East Street and Main Street – they are collectively known as Camp. A long winding road full of bustling shops at every nook and corner, Mahatma Gandhi Road literally houses it all. Everything from Kashmiri goods, leather objects, silver jewellery, flowers, clothes and lots more. Main Street shuts down driveways over weekends to promote shoppers on foot. Free-of-charge wi-fi connectivity for all finds many young people sitting on the side of the footpaths, sipping chai and browsing the net.
Home to the famous florist Shamun’s , evergreen watchmakers C.T. Pundole , the fantastic Manney’s Booksellers and the classic Bombay Store , there is something for everyone here. If you happen to get hungry after the shopping bonanza, choose from the famous Dorabjee’s , the traditional Naaz Bakery , the melt-in-the-mouth feather cookies of Kayani Bakery , and the ancient Marz-o-rin . Camp remains closed on Mondays.
