A 'coloratura' is a voice that has the ability of executing elaborate vocal ornamentation. In the beginning, the term was used to designate both the female and the male voice (there are also bass coloraturas). However, in today’s parlance, this voice –type “coloratura soprano” is used for certain sopranos who have a high agile voice (also called “light coloratura soprano”). In the opera classification of voices, le “Soprano coloratura” is then the voice that has the highest and the most agile range.
