NIMHANS is India's foremost institution for mental health care and neurosciences research. Its legacy can be traced back to late 19th century in the foundation of the lunatic asylum, which was renamed Mental Hospital in 1925 and finally established as the autonomous National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in 1974. Two decades later it was granted deemed university status by the Union Grants Commission, and with academic autonomy NIMHANS continues to pioneer research in the country and provide superior psychiatric and psychological care.
