The first British fortress in India, Fort St. George, was set up in 1640. Gradually a settlement was built around it, which was the first of its kind in what is known today as Chennai. This settlement came to be known as George Town. This district occupies a central place in Chennai's history of civilization, since all eventual developments spread out from here.
