Editor's Note
MTR: MTR serves 15 different varieties of food in its famous lunch/dinner package. Mavalli Tiffin Rooms is one of Bangalores oldest restaurants, and was established in 1924. Apart from its lunch/dinner packages, staples include Masala Dosa, Idli, Bisibelebath, Kharabath, Chandrahara, and freshly brewed South Indian filter coffee. The queues to get in over the weekend are serpentine even though there are three floors. MTR has always maintained high standards of hygiene and cleanliness, and uncompromising quality of food and service. The Rava Idli, which is one of the favourite breakfast dishes of south India, was invented by MTR

Mouth watering dosas and filter coffee. Expect long to moderate waiting time during peak hours.
Best ever south indian food I had.Idli, vada,Kesaribath my mouth is watering!
There is just a hype about this place nothing was good
Be early or be ready to wait. The food - Masala Dosa, Rava Idli were great. The service and attitude of waiters need to be improved.
It was shocking experience when I visited MTR last evening.I know it will be crowded last evening so i went a bit early.Need to get the names registered and got it done. The guy was such a maniac that anyone giving him a tip of 5 or 10 Rupees he would let them in early bypassing others. If you know the MTR staff then you can get in faster by-passing the line.Food was not that good as it was expected. Not even the coffee we ordered was hot. Table was also not clean.Did not give any tips for this bad behaviour and service just paid the exact amount and walked out. NEVER AGAIN SAY MTR is what my family said the moment we were out of the restaurants .
well best place to have a typical authentic south indian food
...went there on a Tuesday afternoon nd we got our tables almost instantly(just show up at around 12.30ish, you'll get tables) ,we were taken through a maze like setting which ended in a private dining hall of sorts...service was top notch..even with around 80+ people dining ,we were never left waiting for stuff to arrive...nd i dunno how to explain this but this place smells & feels old ..in a good way of course, theres this lingering nostalgic feel..maybe its just me..nyway,the food was flawless, northern kannadiga ishtyle, i had no clue what i was eating but they tasted really good, especially this thing they kept referring to as saagu or something...am not really into kannidga food(especially the sweetened sambhar..yuck!!) but then i ... Happy Waiting and Eating !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Meals here is one thing that need to be tasted by each and every foodie!!!!!! amazing one.... though a lil expensive its worth it.... the most boring part is that u will have to wait for so much time tat makes u angry.... but once u tasted there the next time ur wait wont be so boring :)

After many years - at least eight - I recently wnet back to MTR to have 'meals' as expected there was a lot of items and one has to be careful not to indulge in each too much in order to preserve your appettite for the remaining items...

Taste was great as expected - I was suprised to be able to recognize some of the staff ! They accept reservations you can book your seat - and show up on the appointed time ( and wait for a short time)

My guess is that over the years, the crowds have diminished here - but we enjoyed the 'meals'
