Are you a sworn bibliophile who needs her daily diet of printed fodder? But buying books to fuel your voracious demand is proving difficult? How about signing up with a lending library? Here is a low-down on Chennai’s favourite booknooks.
For all you college goers, the best place to be in is Connemera Library , housed within the Government Museum complex at Egmore. For a measly sum of Rs 100 or Rs 200, you can borrow 2-6 books, photocopy and surf the net. There is also an annual membership for Rs 50.
Couple of kilometres down the road, at Valluvar Kottam Road, is the good old Ramonas Lending Library, a perfect place to kickstart your reading habit. It might not appeal with ambience but the library is a treasure trove when it comes to finding exotic authors and vintage works.
Yet another age-old library is Eswari Lending Library (Kilpauk). Scout its dusty shelves and you would be rewarded with rare out-of-print books. Students can even borrow and keep books through the semester for a nominal fee.
Almost second home to all students of English literature in Chennai is the plush British Council Library on Mount Road. The individual membership gives you access to the library with its mind-blowing collection of books and periodicals. If you sign up for a family membership, you can also issue DVDs. Kids have a hell-of-a-good-time at their special kid’s section.
Finally, while in T Nagar, don’t miss Eloor Library (North Boag Road). A phenomenal collection of books from across the world, including the latest releases, is what will keep you intellectually occupied. Eloor allows you to borrow books only for two weeks.
