I was a member for 1 year at Spartan Gym, Saligramam, Chennai. Having been an active gym member for the past 15 years, I have to rate Spartan as the worst gym I have ever joined. The weights equipment is by a brand called Indus (Indian make). They are ok, but the maintenance by the gym staff is not good. There are missing weight pins in many racks. The rubber hosing is either torn or missing. And the benches are torn. The cardio equipment are no better (I don't remember the brand). The 2 cycles are in constant repair. And management never manages to fix them and even if they do, they still don't work. They have 2 cross trainers with the floor under them in dirt and wet (probably from sweat of members). The 4 treadmills are alright. The trainers are usually amateurs, and focus either on themselves or on select members. 2 trainers are alright, but they too sometimes have their moments of dumbness. There is no training on gym etiquette and customer orientation for any of them. Members do not bring their own towels for workouts, and even the trainers don't use towels when they work out. Although they claim they are a/c, the a/cs are intentionally turned off most of the time. The main air circulator are 2 standing fans. I had to scream repeatedly before the a/cs were turned on when I come in and that too I am "allowed" only the a/c nearest to my work out. Most of the time, the gym smells of sweat. The air fresheners are not regularly used. When there is no power, which is often in Saligramam, you workout in darkness except for the light from open windows, or go home. No generator. Gym cleanliness is average. Toilets are always dirty. Parking - there is none. The gym is located in a building which houses a film post-productions institute and there are many 2-wheelers. At times I had to park my car further away. Not good when it rains. Last but not least, management. They will only see you when you join or during renewal. They don't even wish you when you see them. Today, in Chennai there are many cost-effective and customer-oriented gyms other than Spartan. Join if you want to waste your money.
