I visited the Gariahat spa with my wife on 25th Jul 2014. I have many past experiences of Ayurvedic massages and treatments in Kerala, Chennai and Hyderabad. Here the entrance is too narrow and not impressive at all considering the name. We climbed down through a plate glass staircase to the basement. The Receptionist was busy with her job and unsmiling (a contrast to my earlier exp). There was no pleasant music playing but only loud mundane discussions among some workmen inside. It makes us remember that this is Kolkata (oh yes and I love my Kolkata). After sometime the receptionist asked us we were there for what...pardon me? hello? Then she handed us a tattered copy of the treatments list. We chose and waited for another 15min when a lady walked up. She discussed our choice and we chose the Swedish massage and Body polish with facial. I was led into a tiny room, felt dingy...lighting needs to be brighter for people to settle down. I wanted to visit the toilet and learnt there was only one either for gents or ladies ! Shocking! I came back to the room and there was no locker to put my things...now this is standard anywhere. Mrs Seth and team need to please think also about the customers requirements. They are paying enough. Then I changed and climbed onto the bed which had a dark red towel spread over it. The light was too dim and I sincerely hope that towel was clean. Then the massage started and I was surprised. The Deep tissue massage dished out was really good and comparable to the best I have had. The Masseur was an expert. We finished and I was shown into a tiny shower stall with dirty pipes and shower. I returned and found there was no comb provided...there are disposable ones available. Overall the massage technically was excellent (can rate 8/10) but everything else will get a 5/10 max. Cleaning and lighting needs to improve immediately. Shining next.
